What are your hobbies?

Depending on the context, we’ve struggled/cringed at answering this question at some point.

When we talk about hobbies colloquially, we are describing an aspect of a broader idea of ‘serious leisure’.

Hobbies, or serious leisure, have typically been associated with activities undertaken for play or pleasure during free time. But there’s a growing concern that nowadays, everyone’s free time activities always have to be ‘productive’ or ‘profitable’, and therefore we are witnessing the death of hobbies.

We try to tackle this in this episode by answering some of these questions: What is the function of hobbies? How do they differ from leisure? Are hobbies truly dying? What role has capitalism and social media played in modern hobbies? What hobbies are attractive, and why?

By tackling this, we realised that understanding the role of hobbies is of huge importance to our humanity and why hobbies matter!
